What to do for New Year’s Eve in Paris

In a recent survey, Paris ranked 5th in the Top Ten Spots to spend New Year’s Eve. Certainly, at no time of year, do Paris lights shine as brightly as they do during the winter holiday season when indoor festivities amply compensate for shorter days and gray skies.
In France, the New Year’s Eve celebration is referred to as The Saint Sylvester Reveillon. Unlike Christmas day, which is normally limited to close family members, New Year’s Eve is the time to gather with good friends and acquaintances for music, food and laughter and plenty of libations.
If you’re planning to be in Paris for New Year’s Eve, you might want to consider some of the places that Parisians go out for New Year’s Eve rather than the more well-known restaurants/clubs (which will also be priced accordingly).
One of my favorite New Year’s Eve parties was spent at a Montmartre cafe/bar called the ‘Caf’ Conc’ which no longer exists – but there are still plenty of restaurant/ night clubs from which to choose with a little help from our friends at Restoaparis.
Here are some of Restoaparis’s suggestions (translated into English) for those of you who are non-French speaking – and if you do speak French, be sure to check out the rest of their restaurant review site which has scoured Paris from top to bottom to find every imaginable tasty eatery.

If you want the classic Paris, New Year’s Eve experience -head to the Champs Elysees or the Trocadero esplanade for an excellent vantage point of the Eiffel Tower when it bursts into a rainbow of color. New Year’s Eve at the Opera
If you book early, you may still be able to get tickets for this year’s New Year’s Eve ballet at the Bastille Opera House.
The New Year’s Eve performance has been selected in this way according to the Opera de Paris’s official site:
“To mark the passage of the EU Presidency from France to the Czech Republic, the Paris Opera proposes a special programme to celebrate the New Year at the Bastille Opera. This exceptional evening will open with the actors dance of the 3rd act from The Bartered Bride by Bedrich Smetana, the great composer of Czech modernity. The Paris Opera Orchestra will then perform Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune and Ravel’s La Valse. The Paris Opera Ballet will continue the celebrations with performances of Nuages by Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian, and Maurice Béjart’s L’Oiseau de Feu and Boléro in tribute to the recently disappeared choreographer. An original and festive evening around great Czech and French artists to celebrate a truly European New Year.”
Evening dress is recommended.
Note: If you can’t get tickets online, be sure to ask the concierge at your hotel about getting tickets. A good concierge can work miracles.
