Just Married!

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni are now man and wife as of this morning (Feb 2, 2008) They were married by the mayor of the 8th arrondissement – where they reside at the Elysees Palace – on Rue Faubourg St. Honore.
The mayor broke the news this way – “I married two voting residents of the 8th arrondissement” According to Le Figaro, the ceremony was simple. Only about 20 close friends and family members attended.
The bride wore white and according to the mayor Francois Lebel, ‘the bride looked ravishing as usual and the the groom didn’t look so bad either’
You’d have to go back to Napoleon III and Napoleon I to see marriages ‘while on the job’. reports the Figaro. However Katrin Bennhold, Elaine Sciolino ,Maia de la Baume and Basil Katz for IHT’s article Wedding bells, again… remind us that Sarkozy is actually the second president to be married while in office. Gaston Doumergue, 12th president of the 3rd republic (1924) married his childhood sweetheart 12 days before leaving office.
