Take Advantage of Free Things to Do in Paris: Paris Travel Tip #30

The best things in life are FREE!

That holds true for Paris as well. For the past year, WhyGo Paris has been posting free Paris events and activities of which there are many – particularly in the summer months and around Christmas time. Be sure to check out Free Paris for more details, but here are some of the majors to keep in mind:

Paris Greeters Walking Tours
Sponsored by the City of Paris, these are absolutely free walking tours hosted by Parisian volunteers who want to share their knowledge of the city with you.

Free organ concerts in churches and free music in the parks.
Although certain churches (such as St. Chapelle and St. Germain-des-Pres) sponsor evening concerts for which you’ll need to purchase tickets, free organ recitals are often an extension of Sunday services (at Saint Sulpice, for example). Check church websites for free music events, especially around Christmas and Easter).

in the summertime, more often than not you’ll find free concerts at a number of Paris’s parks including the bandstand at Jardin du Luxembourg and the Parc Florale at Bois de Vincennes for starters.

France’s attempt to democratize ‘culture’ has resulted in more an more municipal museums that allow free admission to permanent exhibits. Paris has a long list of free admission museums and even the most venerable museums such as the Louvre allow one Sunday per month for free admission (the first Sunday).

And, if you’ve been reading WhyGo Paris you’ll know that it’s even possible to sleep in Paris for free. Surprisingly, not a SINGLE person responded to last summer’s joke-telling contest which offered TWO FREE nights at a Montparnasse Hotel. Recently, I stopped by to ask the contest organizer at the Hotel Arcadie – and they were so disappointed that no one responded to their joke-telling contest (as part of the Paris Tourism Week) that I decided to tell them a joke.
