Tonga Triumph in Montpelier

Normally, I’d be cheering for the US team, but when it comes to the Rugby World Cup, I have to admit that knowing Tonga is in France, and knowing the enthusiasm with which Tongans support their Rugby World Cup team, I have to feel a little happy for them - even if they did beat the US team 25 to 15. On top of it,the team players are so modest - they don’t gloat and one player attributes it to to luck that the the US team was tired.

The Tongan players low key attitude apparently doesn’t match the jubilation at home - even if this is only the beginning. They may not make it to the final matches but you can’t help liking a team that’s so well liked by its own country.

Another reason why I’m happy to see Tonga in France is that maybe people will start thinking about visiting this island nation which has already been appreciated by the ‘yachties’ for years. Tonga, especially the Vavau islands, are quite amazing. About as far from Paris as you can get.

If you’re feeling in a Pacific Island mood while your in Paris, be sure to visit Musee du Quai Branly’s oceanic art exhibit as well as the Rugby themed exhibit which coincides this year with Rugby World Cup event.

One tip regarding ‘kava’ the traditional drink of Tonga - ‘Kava’ drinking is a ‘guy thing’ - although some female tourists think they have to jump in - remember that kava drinking is a tradition! Any comments from Tonga visitors here is welcome!
