During France’s State of Emergency, there has been a war of words ‘dignity’ and ‘respect’ versus ‘hoodlums’ and ’scum’.
Are dignity and respect qualities that a society can guanantee? Or aren’t dignity and respect qualites that need to be earned that positive actions?
I wonder if the definitions of dignity and respect have changed in the past years, particularly the definition of respect on the streets as opposed to mainstream society.
Can a society survive as an entity if there is not a unanimous agreement on the definition of dignity and respect?

When in France, it’s impossible to avoid talking politics, so with that subject in mind, France (a friend’s first name) and I began discussing the possible contenders for presidential elections in the USA for 2008. This is what we’ve come up with:
Condoleezza Rice vs. Hilary Clinton
Just remember, you read may be reading it first on Paris Blog!
That is not to say that other people have not been discussing this possibility. Check out www.rice2008.com.www.rice2008.com

Three-year old Arnaud gave me my first French philosophy lesson:
“C’est la meme chose.” “It’s the same thing.”
I’ve been thinking about that expression the more I travel. Particularly when it comes to religions and philosophies of the world. Truth lies in the similarities not the differences.
And I am amazed at the similarities - for example, how similar Guan Yin - Goddess of Compassion in Asia seems to the Virgin Mary in the West. The examples are endless.
Stonehenge in England, menhirs in France, Luxor in Egypt, the king’s monuments in Tonga, entrances to Shinto temples in Japan, entrances to ranches in Montana - “C’est la meme chose.” Pi.

Youth is NOT wasted on the young. If you’re living in the moment, you might be better positioned than older and sometimes more jaded observers to turn moments into historic records. Just grab a notebook, observe and write. You’ll be writing for future generations, whether you’re in Paris or beyond.
