(This is Paris Girl’s favorite Rembrandt - and if you want to see it, you’ll have to go to the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester NY!)

If you are a Rembrandt fan, you won’t want to miss the March 28th -opening:

RER : Châtelet Les Halles

Rembrandt and the New Jerusalem: Jews and Christians in Amsterdam during the ‘Golden Century’ (17th Century). The exhibit is part of a larger celebration of Rembrandt’s 400th birthday celebration - you may remember that earlier this year Paris Girl celebrated Rembrandt’s birthday by visiting his ‘Portrait of a Young Man’ which found it’s home at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY after it had been stolen from the George Eastman House in the 1970s - and recovered for the pleasure of future generations.

What makes the MAJH Paris exhibit an extraordinary one is the emphasis on the arrival of recently ‘converted’ Christian/Jewish immigrants in Amsterdam. Amsterdam had a reputation at that time as being a tolerant city (it probably still is in many ways).

In that sense, the exhibit is not just a chance to view five Rembrandt paintings - seen in France for the first time - but also to gather an impression of the city where Rembrandt lived and encountered immigrants with many stories to tell. Over 190 works - sketches, prints, manuscript etc. have been assembled for the show.
