High-Five: There are zillions of Paris blogs and Paris-related sites. These are my five favorites today. Why only five? Two reasons. To get a way from the Top Ten Cliché, and secondly, let’s be realistic – who wants to visit ten sites – when you could be out on the street making your own discoveries in Paris?
1) Ivy Paris News is not just a useful site for Paris events but site founder, Suzanne Hollands aims to bring together emerging artists in a salon ambiance. This includes all artists ranging from designers to dance and video makers. If you live in Paris, you can attend the salon and become a member of the circle. I think Suzanne deserves applause for bringing the Paris salon scene back to life for expats and French-speaking residents as well. She describes her salon as a place where Paris based artists and designers can find out how to negotiate the Paris arts scene, while helping them to support and inspire one another.
2) Paris.org: My favorite part of their site is Kiosque where guest writers describe their Paris experiences and foibles. For those of us who live here, we can often recognize some of own past blunders. It’s always nice to know one’s not alone!
3) Spirit of Paris: A Photo Portfolio of Paris - A Parisian’s photo album of his favorite Paris haunts. He not only takes great photos, but he also writes a succinct description of each locale.
4) A fond farewell to Parisist.com: Michael Cosentino posted for the last time on April 11, 2007. Check out the past posts while you can - some photos of the the past year’s events!
5) French Word a Day: Kristin Espinasse’s site is beautifully written. If you read her word-a-day entries, you’ll be certain to improve your French vocabulary.
Worth Noting:
Why Travel to France: The comments about French vs. American healthcare in the ‘Sicko’ post has me interested! There’s much more to be said on that subject.
La Page Francaise: Lovely still life photo of fruit!
Ms. Glaze Pomme d’Amour: How can you resist a video entitled How to stuff sausage? What will be next? Cabbage, figs?
La Vie de Petite Brigitte: Les Chandelles post - Need I say more?
Helpful Sites:
Paris weather at www.wunderground.com
Eat-out.net (Oubouffer.com) This is a bilingual restaurant review site for Paris (and London, too!) Restaurant reviews by those pay to eat in restaurants. I like to read reviews by people who, like me, actually have to pay to eat someplace!
Restoaparis.com is a rigorous reviewing of Paris restaurants and these are some very serious people when it comes to good eats. You’ll find a very extensive listing of Paris restaurants and only the best get a thumbs up from these folks. You’ll notice that the site is a French site - so pull out your French/English dictionary and go to it!
And for those who’d like to eat like they were in Paris but can’t make it across the pond - for whatever reason: Gourmet Station Blog
(Parisloguer Chris Card Fuller is a guest writer at Gourmet Station, so for that reason, forgive me for any personal bias here, but I think you’ll agree, having a gourmet meal delivered to your door is definitely a good way to chase away nostalgic longings for Paris on the other side of the sea)
