Meet Lafayette Tour

In honor of Gen. Lafayette’s 250th anniversary, France On Your Own.com is offering a Meet Lafayette Tour which will include a visit to the Chavaniac Lafayette chateau on his birthday September 6, to his gravesite at Picpus cemetery and also a visit to Rochefort where the reconstructed Hermione is docked. (The Hermione was the ship on which Lafayette sailed to the States). This trip is being organized by www.friendsoflafayette.org.

Several years ago, I visited Rochefort when the Hermione reconstruction project was just getting underway. It was an exciting time to be there to see the skeleton of a great sailing ship coming to life. For those who can’t get down to Rochefort, even a visit to Lafayette’s grave at the Picpus cemetery is worth a detour. (It is not always open to the public, so be sure to check in advance - 4th of July is a good time to visit when there is normally a morning wreath-placing ceremony).
