According to a poll reported in yesterday’s Aujourdhui, 62% of Paris’s Metro users don’t hesitate to engage in conversation, 46% admit to flirting, and 16% admit to seduction (my question is - where does flirting end and seduction begin?) Ah - young love in Paris!
For that matter, taking a train is even better for your chances of finding ‘true love’. Regular train commuters do tend to strike up conversations easily with other habitual users. Is there something romantic about train travel? Maybe it’s just the fact that if you don’t have your ear glued to a mobile phone or your iTunes, you might have a chance to admire the passenger sitting across from you.
I can admit from personal experience (though it be long, long ago) that one of my best student friendships came about thanks to a train trip. Although time and geography have sent us along different paths, I will never forget meeting Guy (Perpignan Rugby player!) on a train trip from Paris to Spain. What this French student’s impression was of four noisy American girls squeezed into one compartment enroute to Spain, I’ll never know, but I do know that he became a loyal and kind friend for a number of years.
So, do yourself a favor - book a train trip in France - and who knows?
