Even if you may not be in the City of Lights on New Year’s Day, there’s something reassuring about knowing that Paris is there - the Eiffel Tower lights sparkling. The Seine looking somber in the gray winter light. You don’t need the easel and the palette - you can practically paint these images in your mind - with the constantly shifting light, the myriad shades of gray. We still have a long ways to go before we can start thinking of Paris in pastels. In fact, I’m not sure if Paris was ever meant to be a city drawn in pastel. Maybe the best time to see Paris is now, in the grey tones of January and February. Then head out to St. Malo and listen to the seagulls squack along the empty ramparts of a city abandoned by tourists since last August. The fog and mist will wrap around you like a long departed aunt or uncle that you haven’t thought of for years. Solitude. Finding the place to hear the reverberations of your footsteps. These are the scenes you will remember in years to come - it is good sometimes to feel damp and penetrating loneliness - and go back again to the arms of your beloved.
