Gorgeous at any age - in Paris

One of the films to finish up 2006, Desaccord Parfait, with Jean Rochefort and British actress Charlotte Rampling proves once again that there’s a healthy market for romantic comedies that seem to strike a chord with film viewers of ‘a certain age’. If you check out the reviews at nord-cinema.com , it’s pretty funny to see how whether you like or hate this film might well depend on your age bracket.
One thing is certain - whether the viewers hated the plot, the dialogue, or the cliches, Rochefort and Rampling get high marks. Charlotte Rampling’s praises range from sublime to epoustouflante (astounding). One internet reviewer complained that reviewers should be obliged to state their age when they write a review. Is this going to lead to a new rating system for films. Those under the age of 55 are strongly advised to pick out another film?
I have yet to see the film, but I did see Charlotte Rampling in Swimming Pool. Rampling is well received in France and I think it’s fair to say that women in general, but particularly in the movie industry seem to have a better ’shelf life’ in France. Perhaps throughout Europe. Perhaps this is because the fine art of seduction really takes years to hone - and the well honed dialogue of cinema only can be played out by more mature actors.
The first thing you’ll notice if you spend much time in France and begin watching French TV are the number of mature actors and actresses playing lead roles. Maybe too many. Maybe once again this is why there was rioting a year ago November - even in cinema too few twenty-somethings are represented. After all, the only twenty something in Swimming Pool was a mirage.
