Even though you’re traveling on a tight budget, it’s nice to know you can expect a reasonable level of cleanliness and professionalism. Two French budget hotel chains that French people often use when they travel throughout France, and particularly in Paris are the Kyriad and Ibis chains.
You will tend to find these hotels in Paris’s quieter neighborhoods – or located in areas attractive to convention-goers. For example, both Ibis and Kyriad have hotels in the Porte de Versailles/Porte de Vanves district of the 15th arrondissement which is convenient for those attending some of the convention events like the bi-annual auto show or the Foire de Paris.
Now, here’s the good news regarding rates. If there’s no conventions going on, you’re likely to snag an excellent weekend rate here. Just to give you some examples, the Hotel Ibis at Paris Brancion, 105 Rue Brancion will be offering weekend discount rates November 7,8.9, 2008 starting at 69 Euros per night. In December, 2008, from December 19 to December 30th, weekend rates drop to 59 Euros per night.
Kyriad Hotels also has a number of hotels within the Paris city limits including Bercy, Gare du Nord, Montparnasse, Alesia, La Villette, La Defense, Boulogne, Porte de Clichy, Porte d’Orleans. We have used the Kyriad hotel chain on numerous occasions with French friends (most recently in Avignon) and have found the quality to be good – clean and simple.
What can you expect? Relatively up-to-date (especially Kyriad) with basic furnishings. Rooms will tend to be small, but you should have good shower and bathroom facilities. The possibility of breakfast at an additional charge. Although the neighborhoods will most often be distant from major tourist attractions, there will be Metro access close by.
Although there are other French hotel chains, these are two chains that we have used and can recommend for a good balance of cleanliness and reasonable price.
Note: Sometimes hotels tend to overemphasize their district. For example the Kyriad listed as Montparnasse is located on Rue des Plaisance which is not really in the ‘tourist heart’ of Montparnasse which would be Blvd. Montparnasse and Blvd. Raspail. Even though, a hotel may ‘technically’ be in a popular district, you still may have to walk to get to the busier avenues!
This is the Ibis hotel branch we visited for current rates, but for a complete listing of Ibis hotels in the Paris area, please consult the Hotel Guide.
