Flamenco in Paris

In the springtime, a young man’s thoughts may turn to major league baseball (that’s the quote that Chris always repeats when there’s a whiff of spring in the air), but I start thinking ‘flamenco’.

Getting to the spring flamenco competitions in Spain was one of the things that I never did get to do as a student - but for students in Paris who can’t afford the train trip to Spain - the international flamenco competitions will be right here in Paris.

From March 9th to March 12th, some of Spain’s most well-known flamenco performers will be featured including Paco de Lucia and
Juan Cortes “Duquende”. Not only will flamenco music and dance be performed but many aspects of the flamenco culture will be displayed for incurable flamenco fans. In the meantime, you can listen to a few samples of flamenco music at the flamenco production site just to whet your appetite. This sample called ‘Suena’ performed by Duquende personifies his style which is best described by Bouziane Daoudi in his article for the French newspaper Liberation.
Daoudi says that when Duquende sings, “it’s as if his entire life depends upon one syllable.”

The Third Annual flamenco festival will be held at Le Grand Rex:

1, boulevard Poissonnière 75002 PARIS
Metro : Bonne Nouvelle
Information : 08 71 34 91 03
Booking : 08 71 34 91 03

Sadly, March finds me on the other side of the world. Which is why one of my favorite words is ‘Annual’. One of the great things about considering Paris as home is knowing that if you miss an event one year - you can catch up with it the following year. For several years we enjoyed doing the Mont St. Michel, Normandy 42km hike across the bay at low tide which happens every year (usually in mid-May). Spring is a great time to be in France even though the weather can be unpredictable.
