Jacques Chirac has officially bowed out of candidacy for the presidential elections next month. Last night, he took the opportunity to share his deep emotional commitment to France which he has served with “his entire heart and soul.” He assured French voters that France will continue to astonish the world.

In the same breath, he warned French voters about the dangers of nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism (perhaps another way of saying, whatever you do, please don’t vote for the National Front). No one has forgotten in the not- so-distant- past how Jean Marie Le Pen, leader of the National Front walked away with a whopping 20 percent portion of votes – which upset Lionel Jospin’s expected victory.

President Chirac has not given any inkling as to which candidate he intends to throw his support in the coming months.
