Breakfast at the Odessa Cafe

When the sun is shining in Paris, crossroad cafes are the place to watch the world go by. Today Chris and I stopped off at the Odessa Cafe where several streets intersect: Rue de la Gaite, Rue Montparnasse, Rue Delambre and Edgar Quinet. I like this corner for many reasons - it’s in our neighborhood. It’s unpretentious.
At the Odessa Cafe, you can have two cafes au lait and two croissants for 10 Euros. That may not be the least expensive cafe au lait in town, but neither is it the most expensive. It is one of the best cafe au lait that I’ve had in this neighborhood served in a nice cup. Here is a cafe that feels ‘just right’ and very Parisian with out any of the whoopla.
Metro: Edgar Quinet
By the way, Cafe de la Place which is right next door is also a nice option.

Yes, the Odessa is a nice if sometimes untidy palce but my home from home in Paris is the Cafe de la Liberte diagonally opposite the Odessa.

The owner Andre, who hails from Rodez, knows everything there is to know about rugby and I look forward to renewing my acquintance with him and all the friendly clientele at La Liberte when the World Cup starts.

Andre is no mean cook too!

Thanks Grant for your comment. Cafe de la LIberte deserves a visit also. I will stop in and say hello to Andre.

Just in case you were talking about Odessa’s Cafe in Portland, Oregon, you might want to save your self the trip…this was my experience on Oct 14 2007. Bad service, slow-even though only two tables were seated. Waiter was rude. Never got my drink. I was brave and tried four of the side dishes, the corn bread was okay, the other three were unsalvageable slop. The main dish, well luckily it had enough BBQ sauce to cover up the gross, low quality meat.

Have no fear Austin - this Odessa Cafe is in Paris. Metro: Edgar Quinet. I haven’t tried the Odessa Cafe in Portland - I’ll take your word for it. Portland’s a great city - can’t wait to get back.
