Another Paris Hotel

Driving to Paris from CDG? If you have wheels, you might want to consider looking for a hotel closer to the Periperique (the belt that circles Paris) rather than try to navigate your way toward the center of town. For many years before finding our apartment in Paris, we used to stay at a hotel close to the Porte d’Orleans exit from the ‘periph’ in Paris’s southern sector. Although the Orleans Palace Hotel, 185, Blvd. Brune, 14th doesn’t have parking, finding parking in this area might be easier than in some of the more congested parts of town. The hotel also has a parking agreement with a public parking lot located about 100 meters from the hotel, so you can also ask for the coordinates before your arrival.

Orleans Palace Hotel has recently been renovated (2006). Beginning in April 2007, the standard room rate starts at 150 Euros, but you will be assured of tidy rooms, perhaps less cramped than you might find in some comparable 3-star hotels in the center of town. You are right next to the Porte d’Orleans Metro stop. It’s a direct shot to Cite, Notre Dame, crossing to the right bank. If you take the line all the way to the end you’ll end up at Porte de Clignancourt which is the beginning of the weekend ‘marche aux puces’ or the famous flea market.

Although we haven’t stayed at the Orleans Palace in a number of years, I checked out their site and was impressed by the recent renovations. This is also a good spot if you plan on attending any of the events or conferences at the Porte de Versailles convention center i.e. the Foire de Paris (which is an event worth attending at the end of April).

Like any hotel, once you make repeated visits, you get special treatment. We noted that small tour groups choose this hotel and it seemed to attract a friendly crowd. The nearby ‘Alesia’ neighborhood (about a ten minute walk from the hotel is the focal point for discount stores (boutiques degriffes). You will find these along Rue D’Alesia. This is a working class Parisian neighborhood with plenty of shops and character, mais pas de chichi. No pretentions.

Originally we had looked for an apartment in this neighborhood and had even made an offer on an apartment, but fate brought us to Montparnasse - which is a little bit farther along on the Metro line.
