Airport Security at Paris Airport

Sky News reports today two journalists succeeded in getting box cutters in hand luggage through a security check for a flight from Paris to New York. For a shorter flight from Paris to Nice, they filmed themselves carrying makings for a semtex explosive (this was done for an upcoming state documentary) according to the report.
The question is, does any such reporting help or hinder security efforts at airports? Of does it just discourage more people from international travel?
A number of such breaches have been uncovered not just in France, but in th US as well. Does it result in better security practices? Certainly there are already plenty of checking systems in place to rectify flaws. Is this really something that’s ‘need to know’ for the typical traveler. Here’s one situation where I would prefer to remain blissfully ignorant.
