A Garden for Reflection and Good Will

You need to walk in the gardens every day in the spring. The fragile crocus resplendent in the sun on Monday will succumb to rains and sudden wind on Tuesday.
If you are looking for a private garden where you can think about what a distance you’ve come - and where you’re going - either philosophically or spiritually, the Albert Kahn garden is a retreat unlike any other Paris garden.
Albert Kahn began designing his 4 hector garden back in the 1890s - it’s really a jewel box series of several gardens where one can slip in and out of different reveries - walk a few steps and suddenly you’ve gone from a formal French garden to a Japanese garden, a swampy pond withy lilypads, to a Vosge forest, and finally an English garden.
Kahn believed that much could be learned from bringing great minds together - and he did just that on Sunday afternoons - including such greats as Einstein, but you don’t have to be a genius to enjoy the tranquility of this park.
The adjoining museum houses Kahn’s collection of photo and film that he amassed from at least fifty countries - a man who believed in promoting good will - and the benefit of peaceful exchange of ideas.
He died in 1941.
His legacy has remained and even though this businessman died destitute, his belief in good will makes this garden much more than just a quiet retreat. It is a beacon.

Closed: Mondays.
Hours: 11 am to 5 pm during April and 11 am to 7 pm starting in May.
Entrance fee: E 3.30

September is a beautiful month for gardens in Paris and throughout France. One of our best visits to Monet’s garden (in Giverny, Normandy) was November 1st (when it’s normally closed but the weather was so warm, they kept the garden open for an extra day). Albert Kahn garden is at its best in spring and May/June for the roses and irises, but you can definitely enjoy the fall flowers, particularly in Luxembourg gardens or Monet’s garden in Giverny if you want to take a day-trip. September is a good time to be in Paris -even though this April is definitely living up to the song “April in Paris”.
