Is it possible? Red Light would probably say ‘no’. But Figaro magazine has recently suggested that the Paris night life is changing thanks to the ‘portable’ and the fact that nightlife people have decided that they want to sit in a corner and talk - rather than be deafened by ultra decibles. The fact is - it’s hard to pick someone up if you can’t even talk therefore the night crowd is spending more times in bars (like Le Baron)
The cell phone or portable is making for a much for nomadic evening. Finally, bars don’t have humbling door men that exclude people from entering if you’re not wearing the right pair of shoes.
The bottom line is spending less money and going places with your ‘tribe’ meaning the people that do the same things you do or are interested in the same things.
Hmm sounds like conformity to me - i.e. boring.
But that’s another subject for another time. More later, when we’re back from Timbuktu.

Le Baron now closed to foreigners!
what was once the coolest place is Paris has now become strictly a bar for the Parisian banlieu west (bourgeois suburbs west of paris) and jaded ‘bobos’. at the beginning I was a big fan. i advised many wealthy clients to host their fashion after-parties there. Then owner Andre dissappeared and the crunch came. i took my tall beautiful first date there to give her a great time. After all these years of supporting the place I could no longer get in. No line outside either.
My press card did not help. the doorman called Bach or Buck ( whom i since call the big fat f…ck) would not let us in. - because he did not know me, i was foreign, and did not speak much French. He does not speak a word of English. why would anyone wish to humiliate another in such a way other than to abuse his power. to destroy the wonderful ambiance of a loving a cool couple’s night with such a rude reception and rejection. Is that a cool club? To me it’s a cheap and disgusting form of apartheid.
New York clubs have always been discerning but the unwritten rule is understood - two girls (slim and gorgeous) with one guy and you’re in. No men only - unless its a gay club.
France has not changed since the era of heroine Marie Antoinette. The exclusion of foreigners has let to riots in the outskirts. No lessons have been learned. The French have not understood the message hidden in Copolla’s film. Le Baron has not read Peter Cheales’ best seller, I WAS your customer’. Is it not time to boycott the ex-brothel club until their arrogance is driven away through starvation! I say, ‘Buck them!’
I am an American, living in Paris for almost 20 years, across the street from “La Tour Montparnasse.” I travelled many years ago to Timbuctu, a fascinating travel destination. In the forthcoming year, perhaps I may travel again to Mali and will appreciate any of your comments on current travel conditions. This infomation is difficult to find as not many travellers have Mali as their destination!
Hi Mary Louise!
Mali is a wonderful country. Pick up a March issue of French News (www.French-news.com) and look for my Road to Timbuktu article in the travel section. Plan on spending some time in Dogon country. From Mopti, you can even take a boat along the Niger river all the way to Timbuktu.
