Rugby World Cup: Ou est le stade?
“Where is the stadium?” translates as “Ou est le stade: or ‘oooo ay le stod?’?” in French.
Maybe this reminder is redundant for rugby fans - but just in case - in the beer-induced haze of being in ‘la Belle France’ you forget - there are TWO stadiums, one in the Paris city limits, and one in nearby St. Denis where the Rugby World Cup matches will be held: Le Stade de France in St. Denis and Le Parc des Princes in Paris….

Sebastien Chabal - Vercingetorix Reincarnated?
![]()
![]()
He’s been nicknamed ‘The Cave Man’ but maybe Vercingetorix might not be a bad comparison either. Vercingetorix is known by practically all French school kids as the fearless leader of the Celts (or the Gauls) as the Romans called the Celts
In two major battles Vercingetorix faced off with the Romans (52BC). At Gergovie, he gave Julius Caesar a run for his money, however at the Battle of Alesia, having been cut off from part of his forces, the valiant leader was unable to defeat Caesar a second time. …

Bjork in Paris at Rock en Seine
![]()
Slowly, but surely, Paris is becoming the epicenter of rock festivals. 65,800
festival goers gathered at nearby Domaine de St. Cloud for the fifth edition of Rock En Seine which also drew a record number of English speaking fans from across the channel. One of the big reasons rockers form UK decided make the trek - according to some interviews - it’s just a lot cheaper in France!
When it comes to Bjork, there’s no doubt about it - Bjork has her fan club here in France - and the feelings must be mutual because …

Rugby World Cup Stamps at La Poste

If you’re a stamp collector and a rugby fan, you won’t want to forget to stock up on La Poste’s Rugby World Cup collection. My favorite is the stamp ‘Allez les petits’.
You can see the current display of rugby theme postage stamps at Le Musee de la Poste (Salle 11). Rugby was being played in France as early as 1913.
If you read French, be sure to also check out the Rugby stamp archive.

Paris Rugby World Cup Survival Kit

“Oui, je parle Rugby” is the name of the campaign sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The idea is to encourage visitors coming to France to practice their French language speaking skills by talking rugby.
This ’survival kit’ which I found posted on the France Diplomatie site will include 250 rugby terms in French, English and Spanish (why not Tongan and Maori apres tout?).
I didn’t find the translation for such useful expressions, as “Sebastien, would you mind getting your hand, your hair, your forehead, etc, off my face?” which would …

Rugby World Cup Goes Green

France’s minister of the environment, Jean-Louis Borloo wants the Rugby World Cup 2007 to be ‘ecolo’ or ecologically correct. He’s setting the standard high: “After the Sydney games, it will be the biggest ecologically responsible event of the planet.”
Whew - that will be a tough goal to fulfill. First of all, do all those rugby fans know ahead of time that they will be expected to be ecologically responsible?
Borloo goes on to explain in his interview with Le Parisien yesterday that water will be recuperated from the lawns. …

La Poste, Culturally Speaking
![]()
In France, La Poste or The Post Office is much more than just a place to buy stamps. You can also do your banking at the post office, and before the days of mobile phones and phone cards, foreign students used to go to the post office to make their long distance phone calls.
But today, I’m extending a ‘merci infiniment!’ a la Poste upon receiving the news that one jolly old fellow, Bejamin Franklin, will be back in town on December 12 at Chateau de Vincennes, thanks to La Poste who will be underwriting his visit to participate in a celebration of the Marquis de Lafayette’s birthday.
