Saying Goodbye to Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent, considered by many, to be one of the great couturiers of the 20th century, died this past Sunday (June 1st 2008). President Nicolas Sarkozy, along with his wife Carla Bruni (who once modeled Yves Saint Laurent designs) will attend the funeral services at Eglise St. Roche.
Services begin at 3:30 pm for those who plan on being there.
Yves Saint Laurent was one of Catherine Deneuve’s favorite dress designers. The word ‘elegance’ and St. Laurent are inextricable.
As important as Saint Laurent may be to the world of French fashion and fashion history, he sadly will not be …

Nuits des Musees 2008
In half an hour, about 60 of Paris’s museums will be open to the public - for FREE. Some will stay open as late as 1 pm. The big problem is deciding where to begin. Talk about waiting to the last minute to decide.
For us, it’s going to be hard to choose between Les Invalides, the Louvre, the Petit Palais and Grand Palais, but I think the concert at Les Invalides accompanied with a sound and light show, plus a cavalry parade sounds like a winner. If you haven’t seen the Marie Antoinette film, tonight’s …

Strike season begins!
Yes, once again it’s strike season. Now that the May holidays weekends are over, what better time to begin a strike? Therefore, Thursday, May 22nd, don’t expect train travel to be easy. Two out of three trains will be taken out of service. However, the Eurostar service from England to France should not be affected by the strike. The reason for this strike is labor union’s opposition to a new law which would require forty-one years of contributions to social security rather than forty before one can collect social security benefits.

Visit Versailles the smart way!
Transilien (the name of Paris’s intercity transport) has a great offer going. It’s called Forfait Loisirs. Basically, the French rail service (Transilien) will sell you a combination transport and museum admission ticket for the Versailles Palace. This means that you can buy your entrance ticket in advance, avoid long lines and get your transit and entrance fee taken care of at the same time.
Judging from the price of most minivan or coach tours (usually over 70 Euros per person), the total price of 21.65 Euros on weekdays or 25.95 Euros on weekends looks pretty good. …

Summer Housing for Canadian Students
Cite Universitaire located in the 14th arrondissement is Paris’s closest thing to a college campus with student housing on the grounds. Canada has its own Canada House for students. Summer housing goes quickly - but there may still be time to get a room. Visit the www.etudiantscanadiens.org site for updates.
Local contact: Maryse at: 01 40 78 67 00.
You’ll note that this site is written in French - helas! Just to help you along the way - hebergement is lodging. (Isn’t Canada still a bilingual country?)

Magic Pschitt for your Face!

Talk about coincidences, I just finished writing my Pschitt Never Sounded so Sweet post, then popped into the pharmacy and found this product - Pschitt Magique Nouvelle Peau.
This is a MicropeeloffX3 Facial Scrub. It cost 29.90 Euros at the pharmacy which sounds an awful lot like 30 Euros.
There’s an online offer for 27.70 Euros through a club.
You can get all sorts of skincare items at your local Monoprix. The prices are better for cashstrapped travelers.
